Mental Health First Aid Trainings

Adult Mental Health First Aid (AMHFA)
This 8-hour course is appropriate for anyone 18 years and older who wants to learn how to help a person who may be experiencing a mental health-related crisis. The training covers anxiety, depression, psychosis, and addictions. Nearly one in five people struggle with a mental health issue, and the course teaches the participants to recognize signs and symptoms and the steps to provide help and support.
Participants will come away with the skills and tools to offer help to others and increase their personal knowledge.
The course will cover:
- The impact of mental illness in the U.S.
- Risk factors and warning signs for depression, anxiety, trauma, substance use and psychosis
- A five-step action plan to help an individual in crisis connect to professional help
- Local community resources available to offer support
- Group participation and discussions
- Audio and video presentations
Participants will receive a participant manual and a resource folder and can earn a three-year certification.
Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA)
This 8 hour course is designed to teach individual parents, how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. YMHFA is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders.
Participants will receive a participant manual, a resource folder, and can earn a three year certification.
Courses are offered in English and Spanish.
