Environmental Outreach Specialist

Compensation: $22 - $24/Hour

Working primarily with BIPOC, immigrant and refugee community members, this position provides education on how to stay safe during climate emergencies.

What You'll Do

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide program participants with education and emergency response information related to extreme weather.
  • Participate in community outreach activities such as public events, door-to-door canvassing, and face-to-face conversations in order to share information related to staying safe during climate emergencies. This includes but is not limited to, information about extreme heat, extreme cold, wild fires, and flooding.
  • Post climate emergency information to our NWFS Spanish Facebook page.
  • Assist with public events by helping with planning, researching, setting up, booking locations, outreach, and advertising.
  • Translate and transcreation of materials in English and Spanish as needed.
  • Participate in public events by assisting in event coordination, providing demonstrations, and giving presentations in Spanish and English.
  • Distribute protective gear to program participants.
  • Assist families in preparing safety plans for weather emergencies. This includes the location of warming and cooling stations.
  • Prepare hot and cold weather kits for program participants.
  • As funding is available, conduct home visits in order to identify and assess those who might be eligible for portable air conditioners.
  • Work with local Public Health departments in order to get information on climate protection best practices and obtain up-to-date information.
  • Conduct surveys for the company and county as needed.
  • Distribute food boxes as needed to program participants.
  • Regular attendance is required.
  • Other duties as required.

Working Conditions

  • Bend, climb, reach, and lift and/or carry up to 30 pounds.
  • Sit and/or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Working indoors and outdoors.
  • May be exposed to excessive weather conditions.
  • Slippery and uneven walking surfaces.
  • Able to effectively communicate and exchange information.
  • Data entry for moderate periods of time.
  • May be required to work flexible or non-standard work hours, including weekends, especially during weather emergencies. 

Who You Are

Education / Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Bilingual and bicultural English/Spanish is required.

Skills and Abilities

  • Must be able to effectively translate material from English into Spanish.
  • Able to give presentations and/or demonstrations in front of small or large groups.
  • Able to build and maintain rapport with youth and adults from diverse backgrounds and personalities.
  • Ability to establish priorities, work independently, and proceed with objectives without supervision.
  • Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  • Able to consistently enter data accurately.
  • Have effective and flexible communication skills.
  • If using a personal vehicle on company business, one must have a valid driver’s license and meet minimum automobile insurance requirements.
  • Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face, online, and on the phone.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Skill in using a personal computer and various software packages.
