Job Title: School-Based Healthy Relationships Presenter

Reports To: Schools Department Manager

Position: 1.0 FTE; some evenings and weekends

Job Summary:

This project will focus on the social, psychological, and health gains for teens to be realized by engaging in healthy relationships and delaying initiation of sexual activity. Program will address the rates of teen pregnancy among adolescent youth who are at greatest risk of STIs and most likely to have a teen pregnancy. This position will present engaging, interactive presentations in middle school health classes to deliver sexual risk avoidance education that teaches participants how to voluntarily refrain from teen sexual activity and prevent other youth risk behaviors. Will also provide a caring presence in the schools, provide service linkages to participants and their families, facilitate small trauma groups, and maintain a caseload of intensive students needing additional support.

Essential Functions:

  • Incorporate an evidence-based medically accurate program and effective strategies that have demonstrated impacts on delaying initiation of sexual activity with middle school students. Provide information and practical skills to assist youth in successfully avoiding sexual risk.
  • Teach the benefits associated with self-regulation, success sequencing for poverty prevention, healthy relationships, goal setting, boundaries, and resisting sexual coercion, dating violence, and other youth risk behaviors such as underage drinking or illicit drug use without normalizing teen sexual activity.
  • Participate in formal training in the program, harassment/bullying prevention, intimate partner abuse and child maltreatment protocol, trauma-informed care, child sex trafficking, project deliverables and fidelity of implementation, technical trainings, and all other required trainings
  • Help participants build healthy life skills and protective factors that mitigate the impact of past and future negative experiences, empower them to make healthy decisions, provide tools and resources to prevent pregnancy, STIs and sexual coercion, and prevent youth engagement in risky behaviors.
  • Assist with the implementation of The Oregon SRAE Project by working cooperatively with other staff members to implement project objectives.
  • Provide case coordination for referred at-risk youth needing additional support and resources. Conduct screenings, using GAIN-SS and PHQ9, to assess for tendencies toward violence, mental illness, and substance use as well as suicide ideation. Provide support and referrals as needed. Generally, meet with this cohort’s family as well.
  • Link program participants to services with local community partners and other agencies that support the health, safety, and well-being of program participants, including referrals for resources for youth and families experiencing trauma.
  • Provide weekly facilitation of small school-based trauma groups.
  • Recruit, screen, train, schedule, transport, supervise, and retain high school leaders to serve as peer leaders in the middle school classroom. Maintain volunteer database.
  • Maintain a strong and visible “caring presence” in the participating school, including after-school activities, event chaperoning, field trips, lunchtime visits, etc.
  • Make presentations to school personnel, community groups, parent groups and the business community on the benefits of the project. Staff exhibit displays at conferences, workshops, and school-based information events, such as Back to School Nights and Open Houses, to provide information about the program.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Provide timely program reports as required, including entering programs in NWFS program reporting database.
  • Responsible for project deliverables and fidelity of implementation and work with other project staff to ensure completion of deliverables.
  • Attend staff meetings, conferences, trainings, and other development as required.
  • Oversee maintenance of social networking.
  • Other duties which will be assigned.
  • Accept the guidance of the Schools Department Manager and Executive Director in the spirit of cooperation and establishing and maintaining an honest and professional working relationship.

Job Qualifications:

  • BA or BS in social service, psychology or other applicable field. Some college and equivalent experience working with youth considered.
  • Minimum one year experience working directly with middle school adolescents. Have proven ability to work effectively with youth, preferably in a school setting.
  • Possess excellent and engaging presentation skills, verbal communication, and organizational skills.
  • Bi-cultural preferred, but not required (emphasis for those with bilingual Spanish skills)
  • Reliable, confidential, accountable, highly energetic, self-motivated, as well as approachable, credible, and relatable for teens.
  • Accept direction well and work well with others.
  • Use time effectively and follow through.
  • Conduct tasks without on-site supervision.
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Willing to work evenings and week-ends on occasion.
  • Competent in the use of Office 2010 applications.
  • Valid driver’s license, reliable vehicle, auto insurance required; occasional travel.

Working Conditions:

This position requires frequent and lengthy standing, speaking in a loud voice and ability to lift at least 30 pounds. Work is performed in school and office environments and involves frequent use of a computer. Frequent use of phones required to communicate with current and potential partners, parents, and volunteers. Will drive to perform work with the community.

Salary range: $17.30-18.27 per hour
